FIRE CASES FEWER COMPARED TO 2016, BUT HIGH PROFILE CASES ON THE RISE?

Dear A.S.S. Editor

After a steady spell of seemingly high number of fire incidences reported this year, the SCDF had released figures citing the number of fires for the first four months this year as compared to the same period last year, had actually decreased by 15%.

However, SCDF indicated that there were more cases of battery fires. In total, 1,275 fires were reported in the first four months this year, with 13 cases of fires involving rechargeable batteries. This was compared to 1,502 fires last year, with only 8 of them involving batteries.

But these figures did not include the high profile fire cases that happened in May, including the Changi Airport fire, the I12 Katong fire, and the fire at Jurong opposite the IMM. All in all, while fire incidences have decreased, it seemed the fires are now more high profile, and thus will stick in people’s minds.
