43 people at a PAP Community Foundation Sparkletots pre-school in Clementi have been infected with tuberculosis (TB). This follows shocking revelations that one of the staff members at the pre-school had been diagnosed with active TB on 3 March this year.
39 children, and 4 staff members were diagnosed with latent TB, which fortunately is not contagious, and are now being treated.
Tuberculosis is an airborne bacterial infection that is spread through close and prolonged contact with a person with the active form of the disease. Those with latent TB have no symptoms, do not feel sick and cannot spread the disease to others.
According to the Ministry of Health, 90% of people with latent TB will never develop the active form. Treatment further reduces this risk.
