The National University of Singapore has been hit with fresh cyber attacks, which have compromised the computers of more than 2 employees, including one who was working on a Ministry of Defence funded project.
This time, the cyber attack took the form of a spear phishing email, which spreads malware between computers and networks after users click on infected files embedded in email attachments.
NUS computer science research fellow Prosanta Gope’s computer was hacked after he clicked on a spear phishing email from another NUS colleague, whose computer was already compromised.
The phishing e-mail sent from Dr Gope’s account read: “Your NUS e-mail account has been blacklisted and you are required to verify your account.” The message was signed off by “NUS Admin Team” and a link provided for unsuspecting users to click.
This comes in the wake of news that hackers had broken into NUS networks, and those of Nanyang Technological University (NTU), to steal government and research data.
A university spokesperson said despite the breach, there was no malware or data loss, but declined to provide more details.
