NUS & NTU TARGETED BY PRO-HACKERS WHO TRIED TO STEAL GOVT INFO & RESEARCH

According to MOE and the Cyber Security Agency (CSA), local universities NUS and NTU were targeted and suffered IT network breached in April 2017. CSA said the objective of the cyber attack was to steal information related to the Singapore Government or research. No information or data related to students were targeted.

Authorities said that this was the first sophisticated and carefully planned cyber attack against local universities and believed it was not the work of casual hackers. Instead it was carried out by hackers who managed to gain access to the school’s network without being detected and was able to get access to information anytime they wanted.

Fortunately, the school’s network systems are separate from the Government IT systems and the hacking breach appeared to be limited. Daily operations for both institutions remain unaffected.

CSA Chief David Koh said the authorities knew who committed the cyber attackers and knew what the hackers were after. However he could not reveal more for operational security reasons. Additional defensive and preventive measures will be put in place to deter further attacks.
