The LTA is currently investigating the disruption on the Downtown Line on Wednesday, which lasted for 7 hours, a new record longest disruption for Singapore’s newest MRT line. The disruption occurred due to faulty doors at the Botanic Gardens station.
One of the doors is still currently inoperable. The disruption affected about 10,000 commuters between the start of service of the trains and lunch hour. The MOE is also checking whether any students were affected by the disruption and as a result, were late for their exams.
Apparently, this was not the first time the doors malfunctioned. Wednesday’s malfunction was the third door-related fault on the Downtown Line in the past seven months.Being the newest MRT line that was opened not more than two years ago, this is indeed worrying. Why has it taken only a short time for things in the relatively brand new stations to malfunction? Poor quality workmanship, or poor quality materials?
