Some primary schools have come up with rules on celebrating birthdays. They told parents to stick to simple birthday parties for their children, such as just singing a birthday song instead of having cakes or gifts. They said it promotes healthier lifestyles by letting children avoid junk food, allergy problems and prevent them from comparing their wealth with other classmates based on those presents.
Some parents did not welcome the move and were upset that they cannot celebrate their kids’ birthdays in bigger ways. A few of them did not understand it as they used to give out goodie bags and customised presents to their children’s classmates.
For now, the Ministry of Education allows individual schools to have its own rules and does not actually have a policy on this. Schools that impose restrictions on birthday parties are Dazhong Primary School, Pei Chun Public School, Geylang Methodist Primary School, Oasis Primary School, Springdale Primary School and Riverside Primary School.
What do you think? Birthday parties also need rules meh? Chill lah, once a year only.
