“ONCE IN 50 YEARS” FLOOD HITS SG… FOR 5TH TIME IN 5 MONTHS

Flash floods struck parts of Singapore again today after heavy rain caused canals and drainage systems to overflow.

The Public Utilities Board (PUB) and the National Environment Agency (NEA) issued warnings on social media accounts on Twitter to inform Singaporeans about expected heavy rainfall over the southern and western parts of Singapore from 1.35PM to 2.25PM today. It warned drivers of a risk of flood in places including Exeter Road, Somerset Road, Cuscaden Road, Tomlinson Road, Stevens Road and Balmoral Road.

The last time a flood struck Singapore’s Orchard Road and Bugis areas on 8 February this year. This was preceded by an earlier flood at Tampines and Lorong Halus on 3 February.

Before that, heavy rains caused another massive flood in the Tanjong Pagar area on 23 January, just 4 days after another flash flood hit the Thomson Road area on 19 January this year.

On Christmas eve last year, residents and drivers at Paya Lebar, Upper Thomson and Tembeling also found themselves stuck in high flood waters.
