According to The Independent Singapore, People’s Action Party member Halimah Yacob, who holds the position of Speaker of Parliament, is taking steps to vacate her position to run for president.
This is based on information that The Independent Singapore reporters gleaned from a TODAY newspaper report, which broke the news that the PAP has assigned a member from Aljunied GRC’s grassroots to assist Madam Halimah in her Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC ward. The man in question, Mr Kahar Hassan, also organizzes and participates in community engagement activities, explaining new policies and the 2017 Budget measures to Marsiling residents, and had previously acknowledge Madam Halimah as his mentor, reports The Independent.
Talk is already rife among netizens about Madam Halimah’s expected run for the highest office in Singapore. At a parliamentary debate on the Presidential Election (Amendment) Bill, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Chan Chun Sing caused a stir when he referred to Madam Halimah, who is Speaker of Parliament, as “Madam President” instead of “Madam Speaker”.
In that same address, Mr Chan confirmed that no by-election would be held in a GRC if a minority member resigned to contest the Presidential Election.
