LAWS AGAINST CYBER CRIME PASSED, WAS IT A DIRECT REACTION TO MINDEF CYBER BREACH?

Dear A.S.S. Editor

Laws were passed yesterday to criminalise individuals and businesses who illegally makes use of illicitly obtained personal data, including credit card or bank account information. The timing of the law being passed just falls in nicely to the recent news about Mindef’s system breach, where personal data of several NS men were stolen.

While this law is timely, seeing that cyber crime is now rising in numbers due to everybody being dependent on technology, the timing of this law being passed certainly raises a few questions. Was the plan to pass this law was already in motion long before the Mindef cyber breach occurred? Or was this Law hastily pushed forward to be passed because of the Mindef breach?

Certainly more questions than answers, and we are not likely to get any answers to these questions.
