Following the culling of chickens in Sin Ming early this year, free-roaming chickens were put down again in Pasir Ris after feedback from residents. According to Senior Minister of State for National Development Desmond Lee, the chickens were culled to manage the risk of bird flu. Mr Lee related this to a recent bird flu outbreak in Malaysia which resulted in 56,000 chickens being put down. He explained that vaccination may not be effective to manage the risk and said that AVA takes a “risk-based” approach in dealing with these matters.
Earlier in January, AVA culled 24 chickens in the Sin Ming area and attributed it to bird flu concerns. It said that the chickens were humanely put down.
