Dear A.S.S. Editor
And so, it has begun. First, we complain that FTs are taking over our jobs. But now, our jobs might not even be our jobs anymore, with the advent of technology deeming old work skills to be redundant. With the gloomy economic outlook we are facing, it is only a matter of time before we don;’t have a job for life anymore.
A survey done recently by HR experts Michael Page revealed that almost 70%of companies in Singapore hire PMET on a contract basis. In fact, about 80% of companies surveyed indicated that they are moving towards contractual hire, rather than a lifetime job offer. What this means is that it is no longer your decision if you want to leave a company after a few years, but it is the company’s decision if they want to renew your contract after the first one runs out.
No more working in one company until you retire kind of guarantee, but more like you have a two year contract, and once that two years are up, then you might be forced to go looking for a new job. Job security might be a thing of the past. Now, if you want a job, then you have to keep yourself relevant in the job market, because we will constantly be looking out for new jobs.
