SG A MAJOR MARKET FOR BRAZIL HIT BY ROTTEN MEAT SCANDAL

Brazil’s meat exporters are accused of bribing health officials to certify rotting meat as fit for consumption. Brazil is the world’s leading beef and chicken exporter, with Singapore being one of its major markets.

150 countries buy meat from Brazil. Apart from Singapore, other major markets include Saudi Arabia, China, Japan, Russia, the Netherlands and Italy. Brazil exported about US$5.9 billion ($8.3 million) in poultry and US$4.3 billion in beef in 2016.

Police are investigating 30 people involved in the bribery scheme. Meat processing plants owned by meat producers BRF and Peccin have been shut down. 21 other organizations are being investigated and 33 officials are being questioned for their involvement.
