Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the boat Seven Seas Conqueress was detained by Indonesian navy while it was within the territorial waters of Singapore. As a result, there was absolutely no basis for the crew’s detention in Indonesian prison. Singapore has strongly protested against Indonesia’s actions and seek the immediate release of the Singapore ship captain.
What the MFA did not address was whether the Indonesian Navy breached our territorial waters when they detained the Singapore ship and arrested the captain and its crew.
Isn’t this alarming that a Singapore boat within our own legal waters can be detained by the military of another country without repurcussions and the Singapore Navy is no where to be seen. If the Indonesian Navy ship did infringe into Singapore waters to enact the arrest of the Singaporean boat, where was the Singapore Navy whose job was to protect our waters and ships? Are they sleeping on the job?
Maybe MFA or the Ministry of Defence can provide some clarity on this troubling news and do their jobs to safeguard Singapore’s territorial integrity.
