In response to the viral video of a CGH patient taking out his anger on a CGH staff for sending debt collectors to recover $37 in unpaid hospital bills from him, an ASS reader Mary Fook shared a similar experience she had with another government hospital (SGH). Ms Fook alleged that SGH sent down debt collectors to recover $145 in unpaid bills despite her mother-in-law passing away in hospital. Fortunately for her, she met an understanding debt collector who apologised and handled the screw up.
“SGH also…my mum-in-law passed away in year 2000 in hospital age 72. Her daugther’s medisave all used up, paid the medical bills. One day, Debt collector came to my house in year 2005, asking for my mum-in-law’s name and mentioned the out standings of $145.
I told the uncle she passed away. The uncle was so angry with SGH’s stupid efficiency. He apologised and told me, he know how to handle this issue. I told the uncle, if they want the money, go to the cemetary. The uncle laughed. After that no news.”
