Dear A.S.S. Editor

A HDB block at Jalan Besar was reported in the news today as having a staircase paved with gold foil as part of a creative art work done by a resident of the block. However, the Town Council have come out and said that the creative art is actually unauthorised.

Ms Priyageetha Dia claimed responsibility on Facebook for the work, which took about five hours to complete, writing that the “intervention of the gold finally reverberated against the ever-lifeless and grey architecture on the 20th floor of my block”. Netizens have lauded her move, indicating that it is about time something creative is done to beautify the areas around their flats. However, the Jalan Besar Town Council said that the act was unauthorised under the town council’s by-laws, although they appreciated her “desire to enhance her surrounding space”.

The case is currently under investigation by the Town Council, although the gold foil has not been removed yet. So, in this case, is this vandalism? Or art? And who will win? The Town Council with their by-laws, or creativity that residents agreed looks good on the staircase?
