SURGE CHARGING MODEL MAY LEAD TO LESS TAXIS DURING OFF PEAK

Dear Editors,

I am actually quite worried about taxi companies following grab and uber’s surge method to cope with demand and they claimed that this is to allow taxi drivers to earn more, however, I find that they are doing it all wrong!

By doing so, it will only make taxi drivers go and camp at a high surge area and wait for calls and these drivers will not be doing street hails, reason being, high surge is more worth it given the fact that they earn more doing lesser trips. To make matters worse, taxis are not required to clock the 250 daily mileage anymore!

I hope all taxi drivers will work smart and not being money minded, yes, they may be given the opportunity to earn more, but they should not be so greedy and money minded that they avoid street hailed jobs because there is no surge. Because if they do so, the one losing out will be them, not us, the commuters. They have to serve the public first as taxis are also public transport.
