Chicken sandwiches from Canadian branches of global fast food giant Subway have been found to contain just a little over 50% chicken meat, says the Trent University Wildlife Forensic DNA Laboratory.
The lab had tested chicken from several food chains, including McDonald’s, Wendy’s, A&W, Tim Hortons and Subway.
Pure chicken bought from a market should test 100% chicken DNA, but meat that has been seasoned, marinated or prepared beforehand may register slightly lesser percentages. However, most meats still registered 85 to 90%.
Subway’s dismal results led to several retests by the lab of Subway’s chicken products. The lab eventually identified “soy” as the other predominant ingredient in Subway’s meat.
Subway Canada issued a statement saying they “cannot confirm the veracity of the results of the lab testing.”
“All of our chicken items are made from 100% white meat chicken which is marinated, oven roasted and grilled. We tested our chicken products recently for nutritional and quality attributes and found it met our food quality standards,” the statement continues. “We will look into this again with our supplier to ensure that the chicken is meeting the high standard we set for all of our menu items and ingredients.”
