CYBER EXPERTS BLAME PRC HACKERS FOR MINDEF I-NET HACK

Following investigations into the breach of the Ministry of Defence’s “I-net” system, in which 850 personnel’s personal information were stolen, one analyst has pinned the blame on an infamous PRC hacker unit.

The information stolen during the attack included national identity card information, telephone numbers and dates of birth.

Cyber security expert John Ellis says that “there is a high probability that this attack was state sponsored given the current geopolitical climate”.

The attacks follows a cyber security report published in 2015 which also predicted that South China Sea territorial disputes would spill into “cyber operations”.

Although Singapore is not a party to the territorial disputes, it has voiced its opinions on the dispute which involves China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan.
