COUNSELLING AT S’PORE PUBLIC ABORTION CLINICS GUILT TRIPS YOU INTO KEEPING UNWANTED BABY

Dear Editors,

Do you know the process of getting an abortion in Singapore? Recently, a lady went to get an abortion for her unwanted baby and got a shock of her life when the public clinic she went to gave her counselling which tried to guilt trip her into keeping the baby. According to her, the counseller, an old lady would tell you that the baby fetus was able to feel your feelings and would feel sad that you didn’t want to keep it.

I do not think this is what professional pre-abortion counselling should be about. It should be about enabling the individual to know the pros and cons of abortion and giving them full information so they can make the most informed choice. It should be not be a case of convincing them to do otherwise when they already are unable or unwilling to raise the child in the first place.

I hope this instance narrated by the lady is not the norm in public abortion clinics in Singapore and if it is, something should be done to revamp the way abortion is done in Singapore. This is my womb, stop judging and let us make up our own minds, give us the facts, leave the decision to us and us alone.

This was what the lady shared:

“The counseling part of this whole abortion shebang: I had to be “counseled” twice since we tried to go through the public route first but went through private in the end. The polyclinic immediately sent me to a different room to be counseled.

It was just some old lady telling me that my baby can feel that I don’t want it and it’s sad, and it can feel all the pain and sadness and I need to apologize to it if I decide to go through with the abortion.

PLEASE DO YOUR RESEARCH IF YOU WISH TO ABORT, if you bother to research you will know IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR THE FETUS TO FEEL THESE THINGS UNTIL IT’S A LATE TERM PREGNANCY. DO NOT LET THEM GUILT TRIP YOU INTO KEEPING AN UNWANTED CHILD YOU ARE NOT PREPARED FOR.”
