The recent staff axing by state-owned Surbana Jurong will set a very dangerous precedence for all companies in Singapore.
This is concrete proof that any company in Singapore can simply disguise retrenchment as mass termination, simply because of technicalities.
And because Surbana Jurong is state-owned, they pretty much set the example for all companies. Who is to say that all the companies now won’t follow suit? By disguising retrenchments, they won’t have to pay the staff any benefits, and therefore keep their wallets fat, while the ex-staffs struggle hand-to-mouth for months looking for new jobs.
I never thought I would say this, but I now have to agree with Emeritus Minister Goh Chok Tong. Retrenchment is good for Singapore. No retrenchment, I worry.
The only thing worse than retrenchments, is being laid off with zero benefits!
