BUS NARROWLY AVOIDS CRUSHING PILLION RIDER ON AYE

A Tower Transit Bus 97E narrowly avoided crushing a woman pillion rider to death on the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) today in an accident that sent 4 people taken to National University Hospital (NUH).

The accident took place at about 8AM on the AYE towards the Marina Coastal Expressway. One of the motorcycles carrying a rider and his pillion rider on the extreme right lane skidded, causing the motorcycle on the next lane to topple after the skidded bike crashed into its path.

The male passenger of the toppled motorcycle was flung into the last lane of the expressway, while the female pillion rider slid underneath the carriage of the fast moving Tower Transit bus, which ground to a halt after hitting the motorcycle.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) confirmed that it was alerted to the accident at about 8AM and dispatched emergency rescue workers to the scene.

The female pillion rider, who is in her 30s, and 3 others were taken to NUH.

All 30 passengers on the bus and its driver, Bus Captain Azaman, were unhurt. CCTV footage on the bus showed that if the bus captain had not reacted as quickly as he had, a life could have been lost.
