MAIDS MUST NOW UNDERGO SECURITY COURSE TO WORK IN S’PORE

From the second quarter of 2017, maids will be required to undergo a security course during their training before embarking on their journey to work in Singapore.

This is according to Mr Yeo Guat Kwang, chairman of te Migrant Workers’ Centre (MWC) and Center for Domestic Employees (CDE).

He says that this is in response to the recent case where 5 foreign domestic helpers working in Singapore were found to be radicalized over the past 2 years.

Currently, maids attend training programmes in their home countries before coming to work here. The training covers work safety and understanding cultural differences. With the new rules, the training will include watching a video that stresses the importance of security in Singapore, and how they can help keep Singapore safe and secure.

MWC and CDE will be consulting with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and Ministry of Manpower (MOM), religious and other civic organizations to create its programme.

Mr Yeo hopes foreign workers will “consider playing a part as a corporate citizen” and pro-actively keep Singapore safe and secure.

Currently, workers in dormitories are being roped in to form their own networks, which can serve as important channels for feedback and communication, especially in times of crises.
