LEE HSIEN LOONG DECREES THAT NXT PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION RESERVED FOR MALAY CANDIDATES ONLY

Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced in Parliament that the Presidential Election due in 2017 will be reserved for Malay candidates only after the hiatus model was triggered. This is because for the past 5 consecutive terms, there were no Malay presidential candidates.

Under this hiatus-triggered model. while most presidential elections will be opened to candidates of all races, if there isn’t a President from a particular community for 5 consecutive terms, the subsequent term will be reserved for that community. This is provided there are candidates who successfully meet the qualifying criteria.

The Presidential Elections Act is scheduled to be amended in January 2017 and the count will start from the first elected President, Dr Wee Kim Wee. Note that the bill has yet to be passed.
