Amos Yee’s mom supported him and accepted him, because she understands. She is a teacher. She understands everybody should be accepted and given space.
Let’s say you have a child who likes drawing. Should you beat him up to make him like mathematics ?
Amos Yee is an atheist and an anarchist. There is nothing wrong with that. He made those videos not with malice or malintent. He was just expressing himself and his thoughts.
If you say he wounded religious feeling, that is true, but so what is the solution ? Send the person who wound religious feeling to jail ?
In Amos Yee’s YouTube channel, he had a debate with an Arab man living in America. They had a discussion, and debated each other. Interestingly the Arab Muslim man living in America did not believe or want Amos Yee to be sent to jail. He also believes there is such a thing as freedom of speech.
So if Muslims living in America believe in freedom of speech and can debate Amos Yee, why is it that in Singapore, the strategic space is much smaller and restricted? Are we saying Singaporean Muslims are less enlightened than Arab Muslim Americans, and that they cannot think or debate, and are more prone to violence? This is what the law is doing.
Amos Yee go to jail purely as a political prisoner. He is a prisoner of conscience. He never killed or raped anyone. It’s a political punishment, just like what happened to Nelson Mandela, or Aung San Suu Kyi, and so on.
It’s quite unjust for him.
