The Malaysia Government announced today that restaurants and food establishments in the country must rename all “hotdog” food items or risked getting banned. The country’s Department of Islamic Development has threatened to withdraw their halal certification if hotdogs were not renamed appropriate for instance into hot sausages.
Previously, hotdogs which are predominantly made of pork had to be made of chicken in order to pass Malaysia’s halal rules but now it seems having the word “dog” in the food items is in itself a problem.
Sirajuddin Suhaimee, Director of the halal division of the Department of Islamic Development claimed that their latest move was after tourist from other Muslim nations complained as they took the name literally and confused them on whether the food was halal or not.
He said: ‘In Islam, dogs are considered unclean and the name cannot be related to halal certification.’
Checks will be made on hundreds of food outlets that sell ‘hotdogs’ to make sure they do not flout the latest ban.
