Like the other recruits, LTA Shemuel Ong, 19, started his full time National Service when he was enlisted last February. The only difference is his American accent – because he has lived in California since he was three!
Upon receiving his enlistment notice, Shemuel flew back to Singapore, made arrangements to stay with his relatives, to do what other 18-year-old Singaporeans do – enlist for NS.
Now an Air Warfare Officer (Ground-Based Air Defence) with The Republic of Singapore Air Force, LTA Shemuel works on the Surface-to-Air PYthon and DERby ground-based air defence system, better known as the SPYDER. He admitted that adapting to life as a recruit was tough initially, but with the help of his caring section mates, they cheered each other on through BMT and forged lasting friendships.
It is not easy for one to completely upend your life and return to an unfamiliar home alone, but Shemuel always knew that he wanted to hold on to his roots as a Singaporean and complete his NS. We are glad we have such dedicated full-time national servicemen in our fold.
All the best, Shemuel! /salute
