SMRT FIRES DRIVER OF MRT THAT CAUSED DEATH OF 2 MAINTENANCE STAFF

After an internal disciplinary inquiry, Mr Rahmat Mohd, 49, was dismissed by SMRT Corp.

Mr Rahmat was the driver of the train which killed two SMRT maintenance workers at Pasir Ris station on 22 March. The two men, Mr Nasrulhudin Najumudin, 26, and Mr Muhammad Asyraf Ahmad Buhari, 24, were part of a group of 15 sent to investigate a possible fault with a track equipment.

Prior to his dismissal, Mr Rahmat had been re-assigned to a “non-driving” job.

Mr Rahmat is one of the two staff dismissed by SMRT Corp in relation to the accident. Sources said an operations control centre staff member had also left earlier on account of the incident.

The case had brought to light operational lapses, which include allowing a train to ply in automatic mode while workers were on site, not deploying watchmen to look out for approaching trains, and failing to provide early warning to the work team.
