PAP MP for Holland-Bukit Timah GRC Liang Eng Hwa said that young Singaporeans should go be hawkers and “glorify” the trade.
Liang was speaking to 100 constituents in Mandarin at a dialogue session for a new food centre at Senja Road.
He says to help young Singaporeans enter the trade, they would lower down “entry barriers” and even charge lesser rent.
“At present, hawkers stalls which are doing well are those which are experienced. We should encourage young Singaporeans as we need them to be in this trade. Maybe we can lower the barriers to entry, so more youth can pick up the skills. For the new Senja food centre, we might allocate a section for young hawker stalls and let them try it out by charging them lower rent.”
Liang says he has already sent his proposals to the National Environment Agency (NEA) and would await their decisions.
