While we celebrate and honour the achievement of Joseph Schooling, for the progress of this nation we cannot afford to pay scant or no attention to today’s debate on the Administration of Justice (Protection) Bill, which is set to be push through with ease by the PAP’s overwhelming parliamentary majority. It is troubling to say the very least for all Singaporeans, government ministers notwithstanding.
While the government exhort our people to be free and chase that rainbow, the very same government is going to hand itself even greater powers in the name of the public interest while appropriating the national pride, unity and the immense goodwill from that sporting milestone to move on from the issue.
We as a people cannot allow the dominant parliamentary majority to undermine the nation building project, days after that first Olympic gold medal inches us forward towards empowering ourselves as a nation.
Alas, the tale of two cheques. The first a cool $1 million awarded to Schooling, the second a blank one.
