What really infuriates me about this whole incident is the government’s immense hypocrisy. They have no issues overspending our hard-earned money – $283 MILLION to be exact – on a sporting event almost no one cares about, but when it comes to Rio, they choose not to broadcast it live due to commercial reasons.
This is extremely rich, coming from a country that is the third RICHEST in the world. 2016 is supposed to be the breakout year for Singapore’s sports, following a successful SEA Games campaign last year.
An opportunity like this to unite Singaporeans will not come by so easily for a really long time. What kind of message is this sending to potential world-beaters and our current athletes when our government doesn’t even think they are important enough to spend money on.
