After a 70 year old elderly cleaner could not find a job after losing his job at a coffeeshop. Tan Wen De went to an open air carpark along Geylang Lorong 10, doused himself in petrol and burned himself to death. This tragedy happened on Tuesday at around 10pm.
SCDF statement said Mr Tan stood beside a parked taxi and splashed petroleum all over himself before self-immolating. The huge blaze caused the taxi to explode and flames shot up as high as 3 stories. Tan was pronounced dead at 4am and had suffered burns to 90% of his body.
According to Mr Tan’s friends, he was working as a coffeeshop cleaner earning $1,000 a month but was dismissed recently. After being unable to find new employment for a week, he went to say thanks to friends who loaned him money during his times of need and committed suicide thereafter.
However, another person who claim to know the deceased shared with reporters that Tan was scheduled to turn up for work that day and did not expect this tragedy to occur.
