A jobless 25 year-old Malaysian Lim Hui Yin broke into his ex-girlfriend’s home on 20 February this year in an attempt to kill her and then commit suicide.
Lim, who was in a relationship with Ms Yap Jing Ting, 21, had been in a relationship with Ms Yap until they ended it in August last year.
In January this year, he saw Ms Yap with her new boyfriend and followed them in a taxi. He discovered her address at Lorong 25A Geylang and decided to confront her about her new boyfriend.
He brought a 7CM long knife on 20 Feb, a cloth and a cable tie. Waiting outside of her home until a resident exited, he asked for the PIN code to the second floor and located Ms Yap’s room.
Having spotted Ms Yap, who was sleeping, he placed a piece of wet cloth to cover her mouth. She woke up with a jolt. He released his hold on her only after she told him she could not breathe.
After turning on the lights, she asked him why he had brought the knife. He confessed that he wanted to kill her and then commit suicide.
Ms Yap then hugged Lim to console him and talked about their past relationship and other personal matters.
Later in the day, Lim later followed Ms Yap to her workplace at Liang Seah Street and loitered there. Her employer saw Lim and called the police, who arrived and arrested Lim after discovering a knife in his bag.
