Member of Parliament for Aljunied GRC Chen Show Mao says he is “grateful” for the nomination to contest the position of Workers’ Party Secretary General but declined to speak about who leaked the news of the closed-door meeting.
He, however, confirmed that Low Thia Khiang and Sylvia Lim did state that “what happens in the meeting is really for internal consumption”.
Chen also shared that his contest for the position of secretary-general for the Workers’ Party (WP) as “an exercise of democratic rights”. In fact, Chen did give Low a decent fight, reportedly losing by a 61-45 vote.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of his Meet the People session on Monday (May 30), Mr Chen said he was “grateful” for the nomination at the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) elections on Sunday.
“It gave us an opportunity to exercise our democratic rights, and to choose how to govern ourselves for the next two years,” he said. Mr Chen added that now that the elections are over, the new CEC will go ahead with full support from the party.
Mr Low had told the media that Chen’s challenge was part of a “healthy democratic process” and he rubbished talk of a internal party divisions as “speculation”.
