I am a teen who is currently a dual citizen due to my mixed parentage and would like to share my thoughts on the unfairness of several politically motivated tampering of the Constitution!
While I do not contend with the S’pore born Kiwi Teen who seeks to avoid national slavery, oops service call-up, I also strongly disagree in the manner that the S’pore government treats dual citizenship. After all, who asked my British father to fall in love with a local Chinese and bore me as a result? Should children like myself who is a loyal Commonwealth and S’pore citizen be forced to give up one in favour of the other. I want to serve my NS in obedience to the laws here but am very pissed that I must give up either my British or S’pore citizenship after that. Does holding a British nationality renders me unloyal to S’pore when I still choose to serve my national service in the first place and share in the same pain with all other sons of S’pore? It is common knowledge that Great Britain will never go to war with S’pore unlike other neighbouring countries, in the words of PM Lee.
S’pore leaders must do the right thing and take courage to embrace the diversity of its citizens and not unduly penalise them in favour of bringing in more foreigners from third world countries who will do their bidding! They must also reflect on why most people always choose citizenships other than S’pore and leave our shores to benefit their host countries.
