According to Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Lawrence Wong today, he and Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yacob will be the People’s Action Party’s (PAP) representatives for the newly-formed Marsiling-Yew Tee Group Representative Constituency (GRC). This pits these 2 PAP heavyweights against the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) headed by Chee Soon Juan.
The SDP has yet to announce its slate of candidates for the ward.
Mr Wong was speaking to reporters on the side during a visit to Woodlands. He says he is “very happy” that Mdm Halimah is part of the PAP team for Marsiling-Yew Tee.
Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Lawrence Wong and Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yacob will be co-leaders for the newly-formed Marsiling-Yew Tee Group Representation Constituency (GRC), Mr Wong announced on Thursday (Aug 13).
“She has many years of experience as a veteran MP. Most importantly, she is a very good community-builder.
“I have visited her in Bukit Batok East, I’ve seen her in action on the ground connecting with people and working with residents to help strengthen community bonds. I know how effective she is and I have much to learn from her,” said Mr Wong.
“Both of us will anchor the GRC. We will reveal the other two candidates later,” he said, adding that he hopes incumbent MPs Alex Yam and Ong Teng Koon will join the four-member team to contest the GRC.
She currently oversees the Bukit Batok East ward in Jurong GRC.
Mdm Halimah said she is “happy, eager and excited” to serve Marsiling-Yew Tee residents. “I’ve done a fair amount of groundwork; visited 20 blocks of flats I can sense the similarities between Marsiling-Yew Tee and Bukit Batok East. People here are very warm and friendly and I look forward to building stronger community bonds here as well as to bond myself with the residents,” she said.
