49 year-old Karunagaran Ratnam pleaded guilty to a charge of voluntarily causing grievous hurt to his lover, Ms Kalaivani Sakaran, last September. He was jailed 16 months and sentenced to 3 strokes of the cane.
During the incident, the man had bashed his former lover until she bled, lost 2 teeth and was hospitalized for multiple facial fractures. Shockingly, the assault took place in front of the woman’s 2 daughters and horrified members of the public.
According to court documents, the pair are not married but have 4 children. When their 22 year relationship soured, she began avoiding him, but he managed to track her on 14th September last year to her workplace near Novena Square 2. They got into an argument and he assaulted her at the shopping mall.
