The SEA Games’ has not been officially opened and already Singapore has chalked up several medals, most notably in table-tennis.

On Tuesday, the small island-city secured gold medals for both the Women’s Doubles and Men’s Doubles.

In the former, Lin Ye and Zhou Yihan beat compatriots Feng Tianwei and Yu Mengyu, while in the latter competition Gao Ning and Li Hu beat Thai competition to clinch top spot on the podium.

The news was greeted with joy by the sports authorities in Singapore.

“Once again, congratulations to our TeamSG Paddlers who’ve done us proud in the Women’s Doubles and Men’s Doubles by achieving an overall of 2 Golds, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze!” the TeamSingapore Facebook page posted.

“Let us continue to cheer them as they fight on at their individual and mixed doubles matches tomorrow!”

Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Lawrence Wong was also elated after the results were known. He said: “Congrats to our paddlers on winning our first SEA Games gold!”

But not everyone shared the minister’s feelings.

When the news broke, members of the public posting their views online were mostly dismissive of the two wins and the medals haul.
