The Singapore Lions Under-23 football team beat the Philippines 1-0 at the Jalan Besar Stadium last night. Defender Sheikh Abdu Hadi scored the winning goal with a header into the Filipino goal just before half time.

But members of the public and crowd found the match to be lackluster. Many fans complained that although the Lions had the ball for most of the game, the Lions’ missed numerous chances to convert them into goals.

On top of that, the Lions’ star strikers Faris Ramli and Sahil Suhaimi spent most of their time on the bench, warming the seats instead of scoring the sensational goals that electrified fans during their Malaysia FA Cup finals.

But in spite of this, Coach Aide Iskandar said that he stands by his strikers. Both men have been bogged down by injuries and fatigue, he says. More worryingly, Faris’ injury to his left gluteus muscle may not even recover in time for the Lions’ next SEA Games match.

The Lions will face Myanmar on Thursday at the same venue.
