44 year-old cobbler Terence Ng Kean Meng was sentenced to 14 years and 14 strokes of the cane today after he pleaded guilty to charges of statutory rape and penetrating a minor with his finger in court.
Ng met his 13 year-old victim in October 2013 when he noticed the girl loitering around his make-shift cobbler’s stall near Commonwealth MRT. He asked her what she was doing and she replied that she was afraid to go home because she had run away from her parents. He later convinced her to go back and escorted her back home, even offering to be a godfather to the girl.
He started to harbor sexual intentions towards the girl and on 29 October 2013, he took the girl to his home in Tanglin Halt. When she complained about an upsset stomach, he rubbed ointment on her abdomen. He then asked her if she wanted to have sex with him and she agreed. He took her to his toilet and penetrated her vagina with his finger.
Some days later, he brought the girl to his flat again and had sexual intercourse with her.
The relationship was exposed after the girl’s mother died and the girl confided about her relationship with Ng to an anonymous person at school. A police report was lodged and Ng was arrested last year in February.
Judge Tay Yong Kwang sentenced Ng to 13 years jail and 12 strokes of the cane for statutory rape, and 1 year’s jail and 2 strokes of the cane for penetrating her vagina with his finger. 2 other charges were filed against Ng and were taken into consideration.
