Some Punggol residents expressed safety concerns over wall cracks found in their new BTO flats. Responding to queries about walls cracks found in BTO Waterway Banks, HDB stated that the cracks found in some new Punggol flats do not affect the structural integrity of the building.
The HDB spokeman said the cracks were “non-structural hairline cracks” and that it was common that all building projects will have some issues at the end of construction. These cracks are mostly caused by shrinkage and expansion of building materials or by renovation vibrations.
She said that HDB will carry out inspections and arrange for the necessary rectifications when informed. Till today, less than 20% of BTO Waterway Bank households have reported issues related to wall cracks.
For some residents like Mohamad Rizan Mazlan, despite having approached HDB for rectification works, after workers plastered over the cracks, new cracks have since appeared. This was unsettling because of the recurring cracks.
