ANG MOH WHO BEAT TAXI DRIVER FREED AFTER 2 NEW WITNESSES COME FORWARD

A Norwegian who had been jailed 10 weeks for assaulting a cabbie last month had his conviction quashed on Friday.

50 year-old Arne Corneliussen was freed on $5,000 bail after 2 new witnesses came forward to dispute the facts of his case.

The 2 new witnesses gave evidence that Corneliussen had not attacked the cabbie, Mr Chan Chuan Heng.

They had read The New Paper’s previous report on the case and were disturbed as it differed greatly from what they saw.

Corneliussen had pleaded guilty to one count of voluntarily causing hurt. A second charge of slapping the cabby was taken into consideration during sentencing.

His lawyer, Mr Terence Seah from Virtus Law, submitted a petition to free him and read affidavits from the witnesses at the High Court today.

The deputy public prosecutor did not object to the quashing of the conviction and sentence as fresh evidence had been presented.

Corneliussen had lost his job as a DHL director because of the case and had been in jail for around six weeks.

The case will be heard again in court at a later date.
