Some Malaysians join the Islamic State (IS) to cleanse themselves of their sins after having premarital sex or intercourse with other men’s wives, a police official has said.
Malaysian daily Berita Harian reported Bukit Aman counter-terrorism inspector Wan Ruzailan Wan Mat Rusoff as saying that the Muslim militants believe that their sexual sins will be forgiven and that they will go to heaven when they die on the battlefield.
“They think that the huge sins they have committed will be gone when they fight in Syria,” Mr Wan Ruzailan was quoted saying in Seremban yesterday (April 5).
He stressed, however, that joining the militant group which has seized some territories in Syria is against the teachings of Islam.
Berita Harian reported that 75 people have been detained by local police for their suspected involvement in IS, out of which 24 were charged under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma).
The government tabled the Prevention of Terrorism bill in Parliament last week in a bid to contain the Islamic State’s influence in Muslim-majority Malaysia.
