Chiam See Tong and Lee Kuan Yew’s relationship is almost like how it is between Professor X and Magneto.
Think about it.
Both held respect for one another but had different ideologies. Both had different ideas of how to achieve that one common goal – for the better of their people.
Both survived oppression, both domestic and otherwise.
I can imagine this. As Chiam looked at the coffin bearing Lee, he made one last remark to his old friend. Hoarse but firm, he could have whispered, “We have not finished our game of chess, my friend. We will finish it someday. Wait for me, my friend. You always do.”
It was a relationship built upon honour and respect. Two gentlemen born within the same era, constantly challenging one another, all for the greater good. Both fighting for the future of a nation, knowing full well that at the end of the game, both king and pawn return to the same box.
