WATCH HOW LEE KUAN YEW’S SPEECH CAPTIVATED A 1985 US JOINT CONGRESS

Dear All Singapore Stuff

One of the abiding memories former US diplomat Jeffrey Bader has of Mr Lee Kuan Yew is a 1997 meeting in Singapore where the then Senior Minister captivated the Americans, including Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.

"I remember on the way out, she was dazzled," said Dr Bader. "She was dazzled by the strategic narrative, the adroitness and deftness of what she heard about China."

To top it off, Mr Lee had the answer to a question the US officials had been grappling with. Then Secretary of State Madeleine Albright was just one of the many American officials captivated by Lee Kuan Yew's mesmerizing clarity of mind and powers of speech.

In October 1985, Lee Kuan Yew opened his address to a joint session of the US Congress and got a rousing standing ovation when he ended. Do you feel proud watching Lee Kuan Yew punching above our weight and putting Singapore on the world map?
