A domestic flight in the US was forced to turn back after passengers subdued an emotionally unstable man.

The incident happened on Monday night after United Flight 1074 took off from Washington. It was headed for Denver.

Passengers spotted a man, who was not identified, behaved in a strange manner as he walked along the aisle, heading towards the cockpit.

The flight attendant instructed the man to back off but he failed to comply with instructions.

The man then screamed “jihad jihad” as he ran towards the cockpit.

Passengers nearby immediately pounced on him and subdued him.

When he was down on the floor, he was in tears and muttered he was “sorry”.

US government officials said there was nothing in the tackled man’s background to suggest he has a connection to terrorists.
