In April last year, 15 year-old Raymond Miranda and 16 year-old Ruben Melanson broke into the apartment of an 87 year-old woman, beat and sexually assaulted her, and then poured bleach down her throat before leaving her for dead.
The crime shocked the state of California, where the crime was committed and where the two boys grew up in.
The elderly woman, who was left confined in a wheelchair since the attack, was given the chance to speak to the two boys in court on Friday in the Riverside County Court.
“I want them to look at me and remember me,” she said, “You terrorized me and took away my independence.”
The 87 year-old was asleep in her bed when the teenagers broke into her house in a retirement complex in the city of Hemet. They tortured her, sexually penetrated her with a foreign object and then poured 2 bottles of bleach over her face and mouth, subjecting her to life threatening chemical burns.
Police arrested Melanson after a short chase, while Miranda was found shortly after releasing a “wanted” poster for his arrest. The two were convicted of burglary, elder abuse with great bodily injury, sexual penetration with a foreign object by force or rape.
Miranda apologized to the woman in court on Friday after his sentencing. “I’m sorry for going into your house. I don’t expect you to forgive me. But I apologize for goig to your house. I’m sorry. i truly am. I don’t expect you to forgive me.”
The woman thanked Miranda for his apology but stopped short of forgiving the two boys.
Both boys will go into a juvenile prison until they’re 18 years old, where they will then be transferred to an adult prison.
