38 year-old John Gee Tze Chiang pleaded guilty in court today for attempted culpable homicide. He received a 7 years jail sentence on Monday. A charge of attempted suicide was taken into consideration. Gee could have been jailed up to 15 years, fined and caned.
Gee admitted to stabbing his wife of 11 years, twice in the chest, once in her neck and once in her back on 11th August 2012.
In the hearing, the court heard that Gee, who is employed with the security team in Marina Bay Financial Center, visited a casino on 10 Aug 2012 in the hopes of winning enough money to pay for his increasingly unmanageable debts. The majority of the loans with credit companies had been taken in his wife’s name as she earned more than him.
However, Gee ended up losing more money in the casino, which made him think of killing himself.
The next morning, as his wife was getting ready for work, he apologized to her for causing her trouble. When his wife told him about the many text messages and calls she received at her work place from creditors, he switched plans and tried to kill her too so that she would not have to suffer after his death.
He took out the knife that he bought yesterday and stabbed her twice in the chest. As she struggled to escape, he stabbed her once in the neck and her back before stabbing himself in the chest.
