18-year old Naveenthiran Thevathas was sentenced to reformative training after he was found guilty of extortion.
He befriend 30-year Kanthimathi Ramachandran Sreedhar, a man from India through gay dating app Grindr. They agreed to meet in Kanthimathi’s rented room to engage in sexual activities.
However, the teen plotted with two other friends to extort money from Kanthimathi. Naveenthiran would film their sexual acts, then he would alert his two accomplices to turn up at the flat claiming to be his elder brothers. They would threaten to make a police report against Kanthimathi claiming their supposed brother was underaged unless a sum of money was paid.
They demanded $10,000 from Kanthimathi.
Kanthimathi surrendered his debit cards, a tablet and some cash.
Naveenthiran was arrested two days after the incident. His urine was also tested positive for methamphetamine, also known as “ice”.
His two friends – Kishor Ramesh, 22 was sentenced to 2 years’ jail and three strokes of the cane for his offences while Vinod Velasamy, 20 is pending a report on his suitability for probation and reformative training.
