Germans Andreas Von Knorre, 22, and Elton Hinz, 21 who vandalised an MRT train were sentenced to nine months’ jail and three strokes of the cane each.
They used spray paint to spray graffiti on a train at the depot along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1.
Both were charged with entering Bishan SMRT depot illegally 3 times in Nov 6, 7 and 8 last year. They pleaded guilty to 2 charges of entering the a protected place and spraying graffiti on the train.
The duo entered the SMRT depot via a drainage system on Nov 6. They went there again over the next two days and committed vandalism on Nov 8.
The two are believed to have left the country after that. Thai police located them in Bangkok and the Malaysia police arrested the pair at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Nov 20 and they were extradited to Singapore.
The maximum penalty for vandalism is a fine of $2,000 or three years’ jail plus three to eight strokes of the cane.
If convicted of entering a protected place, they could be fined up to $1,000 and/or jailed for up to two years on each charge.
The jail term was backdated to Nov 22, 2014, when they were remanded.
