CON WOMAN WHO CHEATED OLD MAN OF LIFE SAVINGS CLAIMS SHE WAS A VICTIM, MAN HAD GIVEN HER MONEY FOR “INVESTMENT”

69 year-old Madam Wu Shuxiang, one of two con women who cheated 70 year-old Mr Tan Soy Kiang out of his life savings totaling $400,000, claims that she too was a victim of cheating herself. The other 65 year-old woman, known only as Madam Tan, claims that she had taken the money from Mr Tan so as to clear off gambling debts but continued taking the money out of greed.

Mr Tan gave his salary to the two women for 15 years. He believed that the money went towards paying off a debt he owed to the Government. The con was exposed only after Mr Tan’s niece returned from Australia in 2013 and forced the women to confess to their deeds.

According to Madam Wu, who spoke to Lianhe Wanbao yesterday, she took the money from Mr Tan because she herself had been cheated of almost $40,000 by the other woman, Madam Tan. Madam Wu made a police report on Sunday. Both women claim that they do not know exactly how much they have taken from Mr Tan over the 15 years.

Madam Tan, who has been arrested, told Shin Min Daily News that she had only received $30,000 and was shocked to read that the amount taken from Mr Tan was $400,000.

Madam Tan admitted that she had been immersed in mahjong gambling debts for many years. In order to pay for her debts, which numbered in the tens of thousands, she and her husband had to pawn their belongings. She also said that she knew Mr Tan as they were both Teochew Opera fans.

Madam Tan also denied telling Mr Tan that he owed a debt to the government. Instead, she claims that Mr Tan was told that he was giving the money to her for a government-linked investment.
